Zoomable Icicle

Explore hierarchical data as stacked horizontal rectangles with interactive zoom. Each level of the hierarchy is rendered as a band, and clicking any rectangle zooms into that subtree. Ideal for file systems, organizational charts, and budget breakdowns with multiple nesting levels.

Examples

When to Use

  • Exploring deeply nested hierarchies where depth matters more than proportional area
  • File system or directory structure visualization
  • Organizational charts with many levels
  • Budget or cost breakdowns across departments and sub-departments

Tips & Best Practices

  • Click any rectangle to zoom into that subtree; click the root bar to zoom back out
  • Use a ">" separator in your hierarchy field (e.g. "Americas > USA > California") to define the tree structure
  • Icicle charts are especially effective for file-system or organizational-hierarchy data where depth matters
